If you ask Kate Walsh, redheads have more fun — especially when it comes to playing with makeup.
“I feel like I can take more risks,” the actress told PEOPLE in Los Angeles recently. “[My hair] is broken up with highlights, so it’s not so red-red, but I don’t think that’s any reason to shy away from a red lip or a colored lip at all.”
The Private Practice star said she prefers playing with eye makeup, but nonetheless, her favorite beauty statement is always a bold lip.
“I love what’s happening with color for spring,” she said while dishing out beauty tips for allergy season on behalf of Zyrtec. “I love this trend toward red and orange lipstick and pinks and fuchsias and kind of a real blast of color for spring and summer.”
Recently though, Walsh cut back on her lipstick collection — thanks in part to some tough love from her makeup artist. “[He] came over to my house and just cleaned out the drawer and threw out like half of my makeup,” she shared.
The cleanse wasn’t about updating her collection for the latest trends, however; the
alum actually had her health in mind.
“The biggest tip is to throw out your makeup,” she explained. “I think as women even if we don’t mean to be hoarders, when you buy makeup it’s just so juicy you’re like, ‘Oh, I’ll keep it forever!’ and it’s like no, no, no, it all has an expiration date on it and you have to be really careful to get rid of it.”
And lipsticks can be especially deceptive, the star believes. “They last forever, right? Then you have a collection of them,” she said. “But you can usually tell oddly by the smell that it’s time to throw them out.”
Despite her seemingly extensive beauty knowledge, though, Walsh admitted she’s hardly a makeup enthusiast. Said the beauty, “I’m usually pretty lazy about makeup because I’m in it professionally so much, so when it’s just me out and about, I try not to wear much at all.” Tell us: Are you vigilant about tossing old makeup?
