What amazing braids are to snowboarding, buzzworthy costumes are to figure skating. We’ve enjoyed noteworthy ponytails (on dudes) and dramatic pairs outfits (hey Meryl and Charlie!), but the real gold podium-topper (for us, anyway) is the outfits worn by the women in their short and long programs. In the interest of not including any visual spoilers, we took a look at the American skaters and the global front-runners, regardless of how they placed, though (spoiler alert!) we will mention their standings in the post.

Figure skating followers knew that Team USA would have a tough international crowd to beat, but the girls brought it on the ice, both athletically and aesthetically. Team USA favorite Gracie Gold, 18, wore a red velvet sweetheart-neckline dress with crystal details, plus her signature red lipstick and evil eye good luck charm. It worked for her: She finished fourth so far. Ashley Wagner, 22, was all smiles (no viral disappointment face here!) in the sparkling black halter with a Black Swan vibe and a high pony; she finished sixth. And one place behind her was Polina Edmunds, 15, who wore a sassy day glo-and-canary yellow number with a ruffled skirt and a milkmaid braid dotted with crystals.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Mao Asada, 23, a supposed sure thing, stumbled during her program and finished 16th, but her ombré lavender-and-violet skating dress was a winner. South Korea’s Yuna Kim, 23, another top contender, skated a romantic and top-notch “Send In the Clowns” in a high-necked chartreuse dress with embellishment on the bodice and flutterly sleeves and sailed easily into first place. And finally, a major favorite, Russia’s Yulia Lipnitskaya, 15, wore her familiar icy blue leotard with a flared blue skirt, but she fell on a jump and ended in fifth.
A lot can change between now and the free skate tomorrow (and oh yes, there will be more costumes) so stay tuned to see how the excitement turns out! And check out the Twitter reactions to the costumes below.
