Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Formal Pants, Red Manis and Putting Away Your Lace-Up Peep Toes

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed pants replacing dresses at fancy events, a rise in fire-engine red manis and pair of shoes that needs to be retired for now.

Up: Formal pants. This week was less about the LBD and more about the FFP (Fancy Formal Pant… genius we know). And stars did it in a very classy, sophisticated way. Molly Sims wore a pair of lace-embellished trousers and coordinating Stella McCartney top at PSLA’s 4th Annual Autumn Party. Jamie Chung had an all-white moment in ankle-length trousers and a V-neck peplum top at a screening of Diana in N.Y.C., and Gwyneth Paltrow teamed her cropped bottoms with a belly-button baring top at a dinner to celebrate The Conversation in London. And giving more of an Olivia Pope vibe, Allison Williams (and her new hair) topped her white flare-hem trousers with a bright orange oversize coat (all Calvin Klein collection) at a L’Oréal Paris lunch in N.Y.C.

Up: Red manis. Natural or nude beds? So last week. Right now celebs are returning to a retro classic when it comes to their manis. Bright fire-engine red nails were the color of choice as seen on Zoë Saldana at a charity dinner in Beverly Hills. Ciara made the big decision to go red for her show-off-your-engagement-ring mani at the Moët Rose lounge in Houston. And Sofia Vergara, Rita Ora and Maria Menounos also selected the hue for their red carpet cameos.

Down: Lace-up peep-toes. It looks like Katy Perry is not ready to give up her summer wardrobe. Now that it’s November, most stars have packed away the summer footwear for sophisticated pumps and booties, but the Roar singer stuck to tropical prints and white lace-up peep toes at an event at the Sydney Opera House. And we think the entire ensemble should have been packed up months ago.
