We look to the show Girls for ideas on what to do and (more often) what not do in our lives. But this past week, we turned to the actresses of the show, on the red carpet in London for the Season 3 premiere, for tips on what to do and not do when it comes to style. See which two small screen stars demonstrated the up-and-up trends and which one made us want to retire a certain look.
Up: Lace. We know, we’ve mentioned lace here before, but the trend is only getting more and more ubiquitous, and we don’t see it losing popularity anytime soon. Lena Dunham hopped aboard the already crowded (and rightfully so!) bandwagon with a flattering black-and-white Erdem dress. And she wasn’t the only one to sport the ladylike material this week: Reese Witherspoon also donned a black-and-white lace look and Anna Kendrick showed hints of lace in a bright-red Reem Acra gown. Bottom line: Expect to see a lot (and we mean a lot) of lace at the SAG Awards, Grammys and Oscars.
Up: Funky Necklines. Normally, it’s Allison Williams’s hair that steals the spotlight, but this time, it was the halter of her Alexander McQueen gown that got all the attention. The black dress featured a textured, multicolor neckline that elevated the otherwise simple look and reminded us that crystals, sequins and beading aren’t the only ones in the embellishment game.
Down: Major Ruffles. To be clear, we’re not saying ruffles are on their way out entirely. We just think that after seeing Zosia Mamet in this rather over-the-top ruffled Elisabetta Franchi peplum top and Paula Patton in that fabric tornado at the Globes, stars will think twice before picking a red carpet outfit with this voluminous and wavy feature. And if they do, hopefully they’ll go the way of Jessica Chastain at the Critics Choice.
