Naomi Campbell on Her Supermodel Crew: 'We Were Never a Squad, We Were Just Friends'

Updated

Supermodel, actress… author? Naomi Campbell’s latest project is a two-volume, $1750 collectible edition from Taschen, and she has annotated one of the books with stories from her more than 25 years in the fashion industry.

“The photos bring back memories,” Campbell, 46, tells PeopleStyle. “I forgot how many people I’ve worked with and how blessed I’ve been. When I saw the book in its entirety during Oscar week in L.A., I just started crying. Because it’s my life and my career. It just brought tears to my eyes.”

Some of her favorite memories to look back on were the “group photos… with Linda, Christy, Cindy, Tatianna, Stephanie,” she says. But unlike some of the famous cliques of today, Campbell feels no reason to define her group of supes. “We were never a ‘squad,’ we were just friends,” she says. “We were not looking to call us a group or like, alliance. We just were friends, end of story.”

“If something great happens to one of us, we’re the first to wish each other congratulations,” she explains.

Cindy Crawford, turned 50 in February, and Campbell tweeted her congratulations with a throwback photo from a 1990 Thierry Mugler runway show. “I put up a great picture of us when we did Mugler,” she says. “We were in these kind of S&M outfits. I sent it to her husband, Rande, and he had never seen it before. He was really funny when I showed it to him, he was like ‘Oh my God!’ She looks bloody amazing.'”

According to Campbell, “What people don’t understand is that we never had any competition or bitchiness between us. We really were friends. We cared to hang out with each other when we’re not working and have dinner together. We didn’t want to be separated,” she says. “I always tell people it was my time, my people, my girls, well, my ladies — because they are ladies. We were very supportive of each other, and we still are. That’s the thing. We still are.”
