Miley Cyrus Covers a Zit with a 'Biewty Mark' - Should You Try This at Home?

Updated

As a rule, there are always a great deal of interesting things to find on Miley Cyrus‘ Instagram, especially in the beauty department. There are her tips on “how to dye armpit hair”  and “how to share the removal of said hair with the world.” (Not to mention face masks. So many face masks.) But finally, she’s sharing some makeup wisdom that the masses might appreciate: How to document a zit, from emergence to camouflage.

First, she tried to distract us from the spot with her tattoo (next time, maybe don’t mention the zit in the caption). Then she shared how she beautified the blemish. It’s possible she’d just seen the Sex and the City episode when Carrie says a Cindy Crawford–style mole is key to covering up zits, because Cyrus admitted to the same solution, writing, “Huge ‘biewty mark’ to cover da real HUGE zzzzzziiiit!!!!!”

We had to know: Is it really advisable to disguise a pimple as a mole (assuming the location is Cindy Crawford cute, à la Cyrus’)? So we asked Jessica Scantlin, lead makeup artist for Blushington (a beauty bar which just opened a location in N.Y.C.), what she thought of the idea.

“People do ask for this — and I am guilty of doing this! To be honest, it’s the best, most fun way to cover up a blemish,” she tells PEOPLE. “I would recommend this for anybody that is comfortable with trying new things with makeup and also women who don’t like to pile makeup on.”

So how to make it look realistic, and not just like, well, a huge brown dot on top of a zit? “Prep by exfoliating any dead skin off, as sometimes acne, when healing, can start to peel. Try to get this off without disrupting the pimple,” she says. “Next, conceal the blemish and then pop on a brown eyeliner over it — the end of eyeliner is a similar size to most pimples, so it’s perfect. Then set with brown shadow.”

Ready to try it? Scantlin recommends “a dark brown waterproof liner like Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif in ‘Basic Brown,’ brown shadow, like Julie Hewett’s ‘Brunette’ and setting spray.” (She likes Model in a Bottle Makeup Setting Spray, which is used at Blushington.) Most important to the whole ruse? Don’t touch your face! “Since you are not used to having a faux beauty mark, you might need to be more aware of your hands that day,” she advises. “The setting spray will keep it on longer, along with layering the shadow. However, bring the liner in your purse so you can touch up throughout the day.”

And if all else fails, you can do what Cyrus did: Slap on some acne-treatment gel and call it a night.
