Met Gala 2016: Our Favorite Looks of the Night, From Nicole Kidman to Kim Kardashian and Beyond!

Updated

There are so many gorgeous looks to hit the Met Gala red carpet (112 and counting …), so it’s hard to break out a definitive best dressed list. That’s why we’re sharing our personal picks below. Don’t see your fave? Be sure to share your #BestDressedattheMet star in the comments!

Alex Apatoff, Deputy Style Director: Nicole Kidman has been doing a whimsical Alexander McQueen thing lately (how could you forget this unicorn gown?) and I am totally here for it. Last night she stood out in a sea of 113 memorable dresses to me. It could be that I’m a sucker for anything star print, or that I just like a dramatic entrance. But it could also be that she looked like an absolute movie star, from her Fred Leighton tiara to her celestial cape, and that’s all I ask for from the Met Gala red carpet.

Brittany Talarico, Senior Style Editor: I know some readers will disagree with me, but Kim got the tech theme right in her custom “blingy sexy robot” Balmain creation. In my opinion the whole look, from the bleached brows to the Lorraine Schwartz earcuff to the slicked back hair is the bomb (dot) com. I also love how committed she is to matching Kanye and how committed Kanye is to helping Kim craft her look. The rapper collaborated with Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing to create his wife’s gown, which started as two dresses that were cut up to make one perfect design.

Lindy Segal, Style Social Editor: Allison Williams took the night’s most popular color — silver — and did something unique with it, thanks to Peter Pilotto. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good sequin, but the (comparatively) subtle 3-D-printed florals and regal one-shoulder silhouette helped her look stand out from the sparkle.

Catherine Kast, Style Editor: After covering the Met red carpet for a few years, one thing is clear: It can be scary for the stars who are walking it. First of all, photographers line the carpet on both sides, and all of them are demanding your attention — like, literally demanding it at very high volume.  I’ve seen celebs practically get booed if they leave their spot before the photogs get their shot. So my favorite look last night wasn’t only about the dress, it was about the attitude. The way Zoë Saldana braved the flashbulbs — with some majorly confident PDA with husband Marco Perego-Saldana — would’ve been show-stopping even in a plain column dress. But then the way she ascended those treacherous stairs as if her Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda gown was as light as just one of the feathers that covered the skirt? Totally effortless. That’s how you pull off a gown with a 10-ft. train, my friends.

Colleen Kratofil, Style Writer/Reporter: Emma has been on the pants-wearing style spree lately but I’m 100 percent on board. I loved how she mixes a structured pant with a ladylike bustier (both Calvin Klein Collection). Plus, that unexpected take on a train with her tied-at-the-waist addition was just the right amount of edgy.

Sarah Kinonen, Style & Beauty Editorial Assistant: While Dakota Johnson’s celestial-inspired Gucci gown wasn’t necessarily a heavy interpretation of this year’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” gala theme, I have to admit that I’m still a big fan of the actress’s starry number. Johnson paired the out-of-this-world design with a simple and sleek style and blunt bangs, rounding out one seriously stylish look.

Sarah Ball, Market Editor: “I love that she really went for it in this Vera Wang gown — that’s what the Met is for, to make a statement. I think she looks stunning. The feathers have an interesting dimension and the silver makes them feel more bold and dangerous — a cool factor to an otherwise soft look and the train adds so much drama.”

Jillian Ruffo, Associate Beauty Editor: A striped sequin pajama tuxedo? I never imagined such a magical outfit existed until I saw Alexa Chung step out in this sparkling Thakoon suit. It’s now my favorite menswear-inspired look — EVER.
