Look of the Week: Paula Patton's Unexpected Bold Lip at The Perfect Match Premiere

Updated

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

Springtime is synonymous with pastel eye shadow, sheer lipstick shades and subtly flushed cheeks. But for Paula Patton and her makeup artist Sam Fine, seasonal trends are so entry-level. For the premiere of The Perfect Match, the actress wowed with a deep wine-colored shade. “I don’t cater to seasonal shades,” Fine tells PeopleStyle. “I choose colors that work best for the client and the event!”

At the film’s premiere, the makeup pro had a very good reason for breaking the beauty rules. “After wearing a nude lip for a long day of press, it was time for a bit of drama,” Fine tells PeopleStyle. “I immediately pulled out Tom Ford Lip Color in Bruised Plum while her dress was being fitted and the whole room gasped!”

He added the star’s textured, detailed minidress helped seal the deal: “When Paula showed us the Thierry Mugler dress she planned to wear for the premiere, we immediately agreed that the look should be strong, sleek and glamorous.”

To get the look, Fine swiped on the lip shade, skipping a liner and filling in the lip with a small brush for precision. (Pro tip: “I’ve paired deep lip colors with dark smoky eyes for editorial, but [in real life], deep lip colors are best worn with a soft eye, to keep the focus on one feature.”)

Following his own advice, Fine kept Patton’s eyes low-key with just a few coats (three, to be exact!) of Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara in Deep Black, then set the star’s lashes with Surratt Beautys RelevĂ©e Lash Curler in between each coat to “make her eyes look lifted and awake.”

So what did Patton think of her statement pout? “‘Soooooo good, Sam!'” she told Fine. What a relief, Fine says: “Whew! Because I hate taking off a deep lipstick and starting over!”
