Kylie Jenner at the Met Gala: Could This Be Her Year?

Updated

The past few years have informed us that Kardashians make for incredibly memorable Met Gala looks. Remember Kim’s floral Givenchy maternity dress (with gloves attached) from 2013? And Kendall’s daringly-cut Calvin Klein Collection last year? So we have to wonder: Could 2016 be the year Kylie makes her big debut? We break down why it just might be.

This year’s theme is “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” based on the “influence of technology on fashion,” according to Met Gala chairwoman Anna Wintour. Judging by the astronomical rise of social-media-made models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner booking campaigns — and magazine covers — seemingly based on their Instagram reach, that influence is pretty major.

At this point, Kylie, with her nearly 60 million Instagram followers (plus potentially similarly huge numbers on Snapchat), falls into the category of style stars on social media. Online reveals of her design projects (the Kendall + Kylie collection, her Kylie Lip Kits, and most recently a swim line for TopShop) generate so much buzz that she recently had her own “break the internet” moment: In a Snapchat story posted during the March sell-out launch of her lip kit, a person in the background informs Kylie that she “broke” Google analytics. “There’s [sic] 200,000 people on the site, and it’s just too much for Google,” says the voice. Too much for Google might be just enough for a Met Gala moment!

Kylie has also been integrated into the Vogue fashion fold. Not only was she on the cover of Teen Vogue last April, but she made her Vogue debut just six months ago in their December 2015 issue, in a story with Bella Hadid and Lottie Moss about growing up with sisters who are moguls in the fashion industry. We’d also like to point out that one of Kylie’s sisters, Kendall, went to her first Met Gala in 2013 when she was 18 — the age that Kylie is now — and since then her career has skyrocketed.

Thanks to her family’s red carpet connections — Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci has called Kim a close friend, and she’s modeled with Kendall for Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing, it’s possible she’ll be able to pull rank and be dressed by one of them. But Kylie mostly has dressed in emerging designers rather than longtime established brands, like Italian designer Francesco Scognamiglio (at an event in Cannes, below) and August Getty at Rihanna’s Diamond Ball (above).

All that said, the Internet was abuzz with when Jenner showed up to the Met Gala afterparty last year in deconstructed cutoffs and a crop top (see below).

But perhaps with all Kylie’s recent successes, Wintour might be willing to forgive and forget? After all, a Kylie Jenner “Inside the Met Gala” snapchat story would be unparalleled at-home viewing.
