Kristin Cavallari Chops Off Her Hair: See the First PHOTO!

Updated

In the old days, pre-Instagram, a celeb used to just show up at a red carpet with a totally new do and take us all by surprise. These days, stars can post teaser pics on Instagram, leaving us waiting in suspense for the finished result. In Kristin Cavallari‘s case, it was a lopped-off ponytail she posted to Instagram Thursday with the caption “This is happening right now. Just chopped off my hair! @anderssonjj @mrchrismcmillan”. See the photo below, then click for the big reveal!

The star and mom of two is almost as well-known for her long, wavy blonde tresses as she is for her role on The Hills. So it was a major surprise to see a chunk of her pony lying abandoned on a windowsill. But Chris McMillan, her hair guru, is also behind tress transformations for Jennifer Aniston and Miley Cyrus, and celeb colorist Justin Anderson is the Creative Director of dpHue, so we knew she was in good hands.

So what exactly did they do to her tresses? First, McMillan cut off 10 inches of the blonde’s signature locks.

“Kristin and I talked about going short for a few months, and we got Chris McMillan involved,” says Anderson, who works out of the hair guru’s salon and counts Kelly Osbourne, Emma Roberts and Miley Cyrus as clients — and who sent us this snap of the two together. “We’re wildly obsessed with Britney Spears, so she sent me pictures back and forth of her new cut.”

Calling Cavallari’s chop a “modern version” of the pop sensation’s recently short look, Anderson says the duo then worked on giving her a new blonde hue after McMillan worked his magic.

“We had to give her a color she could maintain at home because she lives in Chicago,” he says. “I set her up with a color she could touch up in between, so we kept it a little bit darker and golden at the root, but the ends are really bleached-out blonds.”

So how does Cavallari feel about her new look? “She’s loving it!” says Anderson. “She’s the chillest girl. She’s always up for a change, and it’s been a really long time since she’s had short hair. She’s smiling from ear to ear.”
