Kerry Washington and Lyn Paolo Discuss the Scandal Collection - Check Out the Sketches!

It’s almost Scandal-ous (sorry) how much we’ve been looking forward to the Scandal collection at The Limited, especially because it was designed by Olivia Pope herself, Kerry Washington, with the show’s costume designer Lyn Paolo (nominated for an Emmy this year). So when we were offered a chance to check out some exclusive sketches and chat with Washington and Paolo about the soon-to-launch line, what could we say but “It’s been handled?”

When working with Washington and Elliot Staples (Senior VP of Design at The Limited) to design the “aspirational, sophisticated and feminine” collection, Paolo says, she was delighted by how easy the process was. “We really didn’t have any challenges with this collection! The whole adventure has been fun, exciting and honestly just a joy,” she says. “The woman who will wear this collection is polished and sophisticated — a professional with an accomplished sense of style.”

Washington echoed the sentiment, saying, “I truly admire Lyn and love collaborating with her to create Olivia Pope’s looks each week. Being able to work with her on a project that brings Olivia’s style and confidence to Gladiators everywhere was something I couldn’t turn down.” That’s not to say it was totally seamless. “The hardest part was how busy Lyn, Elliot and I are. Our schedules, combined with our geography, made for an exciting collaborative process. With the help of technology and overnight deliveries, we were able to make it happen!”

So Staples led the team to create a selection of tailored, elegant pieces that echo the style that’s made Olivia Pope such a runaway fashion icon. “We wanted to create a line the professional woman would incorporate into her wardrobe and that fans of the show would be excited to wear,” he said. That includes wide-legged trousers, ladylike blouses and even a cape — though Paolo says she couldn’t possibly pick a favorite piece.

Washington, tellingly, loves the coats, though she was excited to bring to the whole collection the sense of timelessness she sees in her character’s clothing. “Olivia is too busy to follow trends and looks for key pieces to incorporate into her wardrobe — look at her amazing outerwear collection!” she says. “It’s important to have a statement coat that carries across seasons.”

Ultimately, they can’t wait to see the collection on everyday Olivia Popes on the street. “Our inspiration came from the fans, our amazing Gladiators, who were asking for a way to look like [the character],” Paolo says. “I know I will run over to whomever I see in the collection and say hi … and also thank them for supporting us! We are all so excited and hope that the line will allow our Gladiators to enjoy yet another aspect of the amazing show that Shonda Rhimes has created.”

The collection will be in Limited stores and online on Sept. 23. Are you excited to shop it? See any favorite pieces? Share your thoughts in the comments!
