Once Anna Wintour thinks you’ve got it, you’ve got it.
The same day that Kendall Jenner, 18, made her high-fashion modeling debut in a completely sheer shirt at the Marc Jacobs show (where the Vogue editor had a front row seat, of course), she also appeared on the Vogue website wearing hot-off-the-runway fashions as they were styled by the designers. Then the two hopped on the same flight to London to make appearances at London’s Fashion Week, where they were spotted sitting front row together at the Topshop show on Feb. 15.
“Anna is very savvy about upcoming ‘It girls,’ and very much has her finger on the pulse,” says Laurel Pinson, editor-in-chief of StyleCaster. “When she takes a girl under her wing, a Vogue cover or high fashion campaign is usually on the way. She’s done it for a lot of girls, like Rooney Mara and Taylor Swift.” And Marc Jacobs (a longtime Vogue darling) is a great point of entry for up and coming starlets — he’s featured the Fanning sisters and Miley Cyrus in recent campaigns.

Of course, this might be creating family drama in the Kardashian household, as Jenner’s half-sister Kim Kardashian has been part of a longtime lobbying campaign on the part of fiancé Kanye West to land a Vogue cover — with no luck so far. Though he scored Kardashian a ticket to the Wintour-hosted Met Gala (after years of her being rumored to be on the “do not invite” list), he hasn’t been able to land her that coveted Vogue photoshoot. In fact, she was even cropped out of a Vogue slideshow of the Best Dressed at the Met Gala, leaving a photo of West holding a disembodied hand (slide 66).
“Anna is interested in charismatic people, and has respect for talent. Kim has no talent,” says another fashion industry insider. “She’s going to have to work really hard to build her stock up at Vogue because she was so tabloid-y for so long, and honestly, not that stylish. Its gotten way better — she’s definitely chic now, but that is all Kanye West’s influence, which reads as disingenuous.”
Jenner, on the other hand, is young enough that she hasn’t established her persona yet, and doesn’t carry that supposedly tainted Kardashian last name, which works in her favor. “She’s buzzy,” says the insider. “She’s tall, she’s skinny, and she’s wholesome and pretty. She’s also already been modeling, and creating a name for herself. The fashion world is fickle, but I can definitely see her having a moment.”
