Keke Palmer has always followed her gut instead of the pack when it comes to fashion, and it looks like she’s doing the same with her hair as well. At a time when stars are letting their spring pixie cuts grow out (see: Julianne Hough, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Lawrence), she’s gone ahead and chopped a short, spiky do just in time for fall.

Fresh off rocking a super-long, intricate pony at the Emmys (see behind-the-scenes prep photos here!) and a few days before taking the stage on Broadway as Cinderella, Palmer, 21, debuted her brand-new do at an event for her upcoming show. Wearing a lace crop top and distressed jeans and showing off Stuart Weitzman’s Cinderella slippers, the star beamed underneath her just-cropped cut.
According to Keke’s stylist Ursula Stephen, “Short has been on Keke’s mind since sometime last year but, she wasn’t quite ready. Now that she’s moved to NYC, has the new role as Cinderella — and not to mention turning 21! — she was ready for a new look, one that represented who she was. She said said she wanted a cut that was adorable! And I think we nailed it.”
Keke visited Stephen’s salon on Tuesday, where, the stylist says, “She was so excited throughout the whole process! So giggly, happy and dancing all over the salon. It was a fun time.” And as for maintenance? No problem. “I told her all she needed to do was apply a cream moisturizer at night and protect it with a silk scarf or head band,” Stephen says. “In the morning apply some serum (Motions Radiating Gloss is my favorite) mixed with a little Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade, then style it with her fingers or a wide tooth styling comb.”
While we’re sure Palmer’s former long, luxurious locks had a little help from extensions, her new look is a total 180° — and a fun, fresh look for the Masters of Sex star. Are you loving it? Weigh in below!
