She’s been in countless films, always looks flawless on the red carpet and is the Almay brand ambassador. So it’s no surprise that Kate Hudson has learned a few beauty tricks throughout her career.
“I’ve spent so much time in makeup trailers at this point that none of it really confuses me,” she told PEOPLE while promoting Almay’s new spring products. “It’s more knowledge to me, and I’m always learning something new.”
Along the way, she’s picked up a few tips that she loves to share. “I love lining the whole eye, even under the upper lid. It makes the eye pop in a way that’s not too heavy. Also, learning how to do eyebrows and making them symmetrical with highlighting techniques can actually change the frame of your face. And one of my favorites: Highlighting the contour of your lip to create dimension to your mouth. It’s all endless fun.”
One of her favorite highlighting products: Almay’s new CC luminizing primer. “I want a moisturizer and SPF coverage in one, and I don’t want to work so hard to get a good finish,” she says. “I feel like I’m always impressed with what Almay comes out with and how they organize them to be easy to apply and accessible. No fussy products. Everything blends easy. And the products with SPFs leave no residue.”
Now, we love a good CC/SPF combo too, but Hudson definitely has an amazing complexion to start with. The most envy-inducing part? She hardly has to work for it. “I have sensitive skin, so if I put too much on it becomes too active. At night I don’t do anything except eye cream. I’m kind of a soap and water girl. I wish I could be part of the serum world and nighttime moisturizers world, but you have to discover what your own skin can take. For me, less is better.”
Aside from her flawless skin, PEOPLE StyleWatch editors also love the star’s glossy hair — which does take a little more work. “I like a leave-in conditioner. My hair is a bit frizzy and curly in places, so I also use a Moroccan and Argan oil,” Hudson explains. “I can keep up with the makeup. The hair stuff, that’s a low point for me in terms of my ability. For a girl like me, Drybar’s a savior. I’m either in a bun or having someone else figure it out.”
Would the hair-challenged star ever consider a low-maintenance pixie cut (the style of 2013)? “No, not for me. If I had to do it for a role maybe, but I wouldn’t just do a pixie. I like having long hair. I have one friend and she almost has a long buzz cut and she looks gorgeous. But I don’t how my ears would look in a pixie. I don’t know if it’s right for me.”
So now we know what to get the actress if we ever picked her name out of our celebrity fantasy grab bag (Drybar gift certificates!), but what else is on her holiday wish list?
