Jordana Brewster became a silver screen siren thanks to her role as Mia Toretto in the Fast and Furious action film franchise. But this year, the actress took on a a very different role as Denise Brown in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson and she admits, the style and beauty aesthetic of her character was all too real and very’90s.
“Because I’m playing a real person, I didn’t feel vain at all going into that,” she tells PeopleStyle. “We’re actually wearing clothes that are from the ’90s. The costume designer was really brilliant — there were Guess booties! I was like, ‘Oh my god, I remember wearing those back in the day!'”
But, she adds, some the show’s costumes were almost too nostalgic for her taste: “And there were shoulder pads — I think we took some of the shoulders pads in because they were crazy,” she says. “But it’s been really, really fun. With the exception of the high-waisted jeans. I wish those never come back.”
Unlike the oversize shoulder pads, Brewster says there was an aspect of Brown’s style, particularly from her beauty routine, that has slowly crept into the star’s own personal regimen — no matter how hard she fights it.
“You know what I did notice? At first, I hated my hair initially on the show, like hated, because it’s this very square, giant poof,” she admits to PeopleStyle. “But now, I notice I’m constantly like putting my hair to the side, and it’s like this big poof, and I’m like, ‘What am I doing?’ It’s something my mom used to do.”

When she’s not playing a lady of the ’90s on TV, Brewster says her off-camera beauty routine is typically dependent on her mood and what’s trending, which, she says, sometimes takes her back to her teenage days.
“I like the trend that’s going on right now with the really bold blue and green eyeliner,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I used to do that all the time in the ’90s. Like, I used to literally match my top to my eye shadow, like baby blue. I don’t think I’ll do that [now] — I may be a little too old for that. But I think makeup should be really fun.”
She adds that even though she’s surrounded by hair and makeup pros on set, there’s one aspect of her beauty look she can’t wait to nail on her own: “My next hurdle that I want to tackle is putting on my own fake lashes because I don’t know how to do that — it’s really hard to do on yourself. I really want to learn, though.”
And we doubt she’ll have a hard time mastering the lash look with help from her makeup artist, Jamie Greenberg, who’s she’s teamed up with, along with Zyrtec and Gilt, to help women combat spring’s unspoken beauty blunder: allergy face.
“I first realized I had really bad allergies when I moved to Dallas for the show, Dallas. There, the pollen count is ridiculously high and has the worst allergy season,” she says. “Working with Jamie, I realized what allergy face was and thought, ‘Okay, that’s what I’m suffering from!’ So it just seemed like a really organic, natural thing [to team up with them].”
Allergy face, a problem that plagues Brewster, especially during the warmer months, can range from red, swollen eyes to dry, itchy skin to puffiness in the face. And can sometimes get in the way of her job — and her date night with husband, film producer Andrew Form.
But she’s learned how to use her makeup as coverup.
“[My date night look] depends again on whether or not I need to distract from my allergy eyes. If I have Allergy Face and want to draw attention to my lips, I’ll do either a bold lip or a bold eye,” she explains, “I think both doesn’t look good. So I’ll either do really simple eyes and a red lip, which I love.”
Brewster adds that sometimes she likes to match her makeup to her date-night ensembles: “I think you also have to coordinate [your look] with your outfit because if you’re wearing a lot of intricate things in your outfit, you shouldn’t do a bold lip,” the actress explains. “But simple eyes with bold lip is really striking. Otherwise, I just wear tons of mascara, eyeliner and I love wearing YSL Beauté Touche Éclat.”
