Jaime King Takes Us Back to the Roaring '20s

Updated

With The Great Gatsby on the way and vintage fashion as hot as ever, it’s a good time to learn about embracing 1920s style. That’s the topic of a new pictorial in the March issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, which features model-actress Jaime King in a variety of girly ’20s-inspired looks, each with a modern twist.

“Fashion is such a great way to express your individuality and follow your instincts,” the Hart of Dixie star tells the magazine. “You can be very daring in your choices with a modern ’20s look.”

Wearing dresses by Nanette Lepore, BCBG Max Azria, Costello Tagliapietra and more, King demonstrates various ’20s trends like pattern boldness (“I love mixing blue and orange, lace and stripes,” she shares) and layering. “I like to layer things you wouldn’t normally think to combine,” she reveals. “It can all come together like a piece of art.”

If you’re interested in trying ’20s with a twist, O‘s creative director, Adam Glassman, has some tips. “Mix menswear-inspired pieces with feminine glamour — think cocktail rings, shoulder-baring tops,” he tells PEOPLE. Another idea? “Consider long-strand necklaces, especially if you have a larger bust — they visually elongate your torso.”

But his third bit of advice is perhaps the most exciting. “In the ’20s, women’s clothes became less restrictive and more comfortable,” he shares. “Put away the pants and the pencil skirts for the moment and indulge in long dresses that skim the body.” Done and done!
