How Can the Met Gala Go on Without Diane Kruger? We Look Back at the 9-Time Attendee's Best Style Moments

Updated

There are few things we’ve come to expect at the Met Gala. Anna Wintour’s signature bob. Beyoncé and Jay-Z closing the carpet. And Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson in coordinating couple style. So when Kruger announced on Instagram she’ll be sitting this year out, there was a resounding gasp from PeopleStyle editors.

Kruger kept mum on the details of why she’s not attending this year, but she did reminiscence by sharing her best style moments from Met Ball’s past. This is an attendee who’s never had a red carpet miss in her nine Met Gala appearances. Just check them all out for yourself.

She first attended in 2004 alongside designer Nicolas Ghesquière to the “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century” exhibition in a gold body-skimming gown with long, matching neck scarf (and that perfectly messy “bedhead” hair). Then she made her carpet couple debut with beau Jackson in 2008 in a silver Alberta Ferretti cocktail dress featuring sequin embellishments on the shoulders. She kept the short trend going in 2009 in a white Chanel Couture mini with floral appliqués.

In 2010 she went understated in a sleek and simple white Calvin Klein gown, but brought the wow-factor thanks to its curve-accentuating cut. Then showed a little more skin in 2011 with a Jason Wu nude-embellished top and thigh-high slit. She really amped-up the drama in 2012 with her bright Prada gown featuring a long train accentuated with an ostrich-feather hemline.

In 2013 she really dressed for the theme, dyeing her hair with hot pink streaks to accentuate her sheer, lace Chanel Couture dress and reflect the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme. The following year she was back to her signature sleek designs, supporting her friend Jason Wu’s collection for Hugo Boss in an icy blue gown with pleated skirt detail. And last year, she wore her most varied look yet in a silver bustier top with sheer pants (both Chanel Haute Couture).

And to make this already sad style news worse, we also learned the model of the moment, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover star Ashley Graham will not attend (but she told PeopleStyle she hopes to go next year) as well as past carpet standout Miley Cyrus. Cyrus was spotted with on-again, off-again beau Liam Hemsworth touching down in Brisbane, Australia after spending time on vacation with his family in Byron Bay, Australia.

Candice Swanepoel announced on Instagram she’s not attending this year either with a throwback pic of last year’s gown. “Gonna miss dressing up and feeling like a princess with all my girls tonight,” she wrote.”

And another stylish couple will be one half short. Colin Firth’s wife, Livia Firth, announced the news on Instagram, that he’s busy filming in London to attend, but she has found a new red carpet date to represent the fashionable family tonight.
