Gwen Stefani Thought Fashion Was 'Stuck Up'

Growing up in Anaheim, Calif., Gwen Stefani always found fashion elusive. “It was something I couldn’t touch,” she reveals in a recent interview with
Stylist
magazine. “I’d never even look in fashion magazines because for me, that was just a stuck-up world.” Fast forward a couple decades, and the 41-year-old is a brand ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, helms a venerable fashion empire and rocks a practically-trademarked look. “It never gets old,” she says of signature crimson lips and platinum locks, which she touches up bi-weekly, “I could do it all day long — I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl.” But much like longevity, identity is easily compromised in Hollywood. “When you start out being on covers of magazines, there’s so much politics,” she explains. “You’re like, ‘Wait, I don’t wear lavender, that’s not what I do.’ That’s the fun thing about success: the freedom you get and people learning to trust you and being inspired by you.” —Justine Harman
