Gabrielle Union already has the beautiful (and blinding!) bling for the big day. Now she’s moving on to the details — like her bridal beauty look. “For me, less is more. I’m not going to experiment with some random makeup style on my biggest day,” Union told PEOPLE. And the Being Mary Jane star has advice for her fellow brides-to-be. “Don’t surprise people by coming out looking like somebody else! Look like yourself, just a mildly cuter version of yourself. Keep it light and fresh, especially if you have a summer wedding, you want something that is going to withstand heat and tears and hugs.”

Although Union has strong opinions for her wedding (“No centerpieces — they obstruct the view and flow of conversation — and no bridesmaids”), it’s her groom, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade, who is running point. “We call him Groomzilla,” she jokes. “I come in for like wine tasting and food. I’m like: What do we have? What are our colors? What is the date? I’m still waiting for a Save The Date so I know what the hell is going on.”
But it can’t all be about wedding planning — Union has plenty of other summer shopping to do. “I just went to Zara to make sure I got some basics without spending my mortgage payment!” On the list: “beautifully distressed” light-wash jeans and three men’s blazers. Yes, you read that right, Union shops in the men’s department. Let her explain. “We’re always trying to get the boyfriend look, but [the clothes] are really cut for women,” Union shares, “I wanted a boxier, slouchier look that I wasn’t really able to find in the women’s [section], so my stylist, Jason Bolden, steered me to Zara’s men’s department.”
As for summer beauty, the star keeps it more feminine and practical. “My smile is always my first order of business,” says Union, who swears by the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush (she calls it the “Bentley of toothbrushes”), “and you can’t really miss with a red lip. I’ve adopted the Gwen Stefani mode of living.”
As for her hair, it’s all about her signature sculpted style: the topknot. “As women, we’re huggers and all of our hugging can really screw up your hair,” Union explains. “When you mix hugging and humidity, it’s not your friend. So a topknot kind of idiot-proofs and keeps your hair tight, pretty, easy.”
