If there’s any woman who could rival Michelle Obama‘s status as America’s favorite political fashion plate (and First Lady), it’s surely another sartorially savvy “government official,” Kerry Washington’s character Olivia Pope on
. So when Pope showed up on Thursday night’s episode wearing Michelle’s exact State of the Union dress, you best believe it was a Fashion Faceoff for the history books.

Back in January, the President gave an optimistic State of the Union speech on the continued growth and change he hopes to see in the nation, and while his words were undeniably moving, they couldn’t quite compete with the First Lady’s show-stealing (and equally sunny) saffron-hued wool crepe sheath from designer Narciso Rodriguez. Paired with loose, easy waves, her look felt at once relaxed, clean, and very sophisticated.

And Olivia Pope clearly agrees with us, stealing not only the FLOTUS’s dress, but also a few of her styling cues, pairing the look with a simple gold watch and keeping her curls down, loose, and framing her face. Kerry Washington’s character typically dresses in a more sedate color palette, so seeing her in this vibrant marigold was as surprising and fun as when we saw it for the first time on Obama. But most importantly, could this dress be a harbinger of big political moves ahead for Pope? Guess we’ll have to wait three more weeks for the finale to find out.
Of note: This isn’t the First Lady’s first State of the Union Fashion Faceoff with a politically powerful TV character. She also had a style showdown with The Good Wife‘s Alicia Florrick in a smart Michael Kors skirt suit. And of course, Washington was psyched to be in such good company, Tweeting during last night’s Scandal all about the coincidence.
