Elle Fanning: Calling My Style Weird Is 'a Compliment'

“If people say something [I wear] is sort of weird, I’m like, Oh, that’s a great compliment,” Elle Fanning chirps in the latest issue of Teen Vogue. The 13-year-old, who’s starred in campaigns for Marc Jacobs, went to Paris with Karl Lagerfeld and recently modeled Rodarte, spends her free time on style.com and street-style blogs, saving her favorite looks on her computer.

“She’s the go-to fashion person in the family,” big sis Dakota tells the magazine. “Elle knows every single model, every single collection, every single piece from every collection. She has a real passion. She genuinely appreciates the workmanship and creativity.”

Elle, who has a bulletin board in her bedroom covered with magazine tear sheets, even offers style tips to family. “I remember the first time Dakota asked me for fashion advice about what to put with what,” she says. “I was like, My big sister is asking me?” “It’s funny, ’cause when you’re an older sister, you try to be the leader and example,” Dakota adds. “I’ve recently had to accept that we’re equals.”

However, Elle still holds onto some of her younger values: she rarely wears makeup, keeps her school uniform below the knees and prefers “clunky” shoes to stilettos. “I’d much rather look like a 2-year-old than a 21-year-old,” she says. “You don’t want to do everything right now.”

That doesn’t mean she’s totally against playing grown-up, though. “She steals my clothes,” Dakota reveals, adding that the two generally have a “no-closet-sharing” policy — one that Elle has been known to break.

“I was in London working on a film, and I was looking online and these pictures came up on my homepage,” the big sis recalls. “She was in my hat, my dress, my shoes. I called her up and was like, ‘I caught you! They photographed you wearing all my stuff. Put it back!'” Elle’s response? “She didn’t care at all,” Dakota says. “She hung up on me.” For more with Elle, visit teenvogue.com. Tell us: Do you steal clothes from your sister?
