'Cool California Girl' Gigi Hadid Sets Sail with Tommy Hilfiger, Wears Three Looks on the Runway

Updated

If anyone could upstage a fashion show of Titanic-size proportion, it’s Gigi Hadid. Although the Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2016 runway featured a life-size recreation of a vintage cruise ship (steam and all), Hadid stole the show. She’s set to debut a collection with the designer in September, Gigi by Tommy Hilfiger, which PeopleStyle asked her about backstage. We also had to find out the highlights of Gigi’s fashion week so far, plus, what everyone is really dying to know — how long it took her to get that white paint out of her hair after Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show.

Hadid hit the runway in three romantic looks, including two A-line dresses and a blouse with bloomers. She calls the nautical-theme set “very fun” crediting Hilfiger for always hitting it out of the park.

“I always love big sets and Tommy always does a great job of that,” she told PeopleStyle.

For Hilfiger, he explains the theme was his way of introducing a cool new spin to fall. “I love anything nautical,” the designer shared. “I love sailing, yachting. I love the water. And winter nautical is kinds of cool. We’ve always done nautical for spring. So we’re doing vintage with a sense of humor and some sexiness.”

And he counted on none other than his “cool, California girl” to anchor the show. “[Gigi’s] relaxed, chic and she’s beyond a supermodel,” he said. “She’s a super person. She’s an Instagram star. She’s the woman of today.”

Gigi’s mom, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Yolanda Foster, was luckily able to make it to the show, having to sit out many in the past while battling Lyme disease.

“I can’t wait to get on the ship and watch my baby girl,” she told PeopleStyle backstage.

As for Gigi’s foray into designing a collection with Tommmy Hilfiger, Foster is not surprised at all that she has the eye for it.

“Gigi has a very authentic style. She was born with it, and it’s just beautiful to see it now coming to life, to see the pieces from a collection that is amazing,” Foster explained. “She really always took on her own style. She never let me dress her. She always had a very distinct way. She would say, ‘I want to wear this, I want to wear that.’ I guess she was born to do this.”

Although it wasn’t a complete family affair (younger sister Bella sat this show out) Gigi explained it’s “always fun” modeling alongside her. “Whenever [Bella] is at a show, it feels like home.”

As for some of Gigi’s NYFW highlights, Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show certainly made the cut.

“Rhianna is so nice. She knew every model’s name in the show. She makes everyone feel special,” she shared. “She chose every person in the show because she likes who they are, and we never felt unappreciated.”

In fact, it made a larger impact than Gigi thought possible. “I was already a huge fan, but I’m definitely her biggest fan after the show. And I loved the clothes. Sometimes when you see the [viewing] screen, when the show starts, it’s… whatever. But when I saw that screen, I got chills,” she said. “The whole set and the way everything was displayed was just beautiful. So I congratulate her.”

As for the stark-white hair — which she left in during an after party following the runway, Gigi maintained it was actually way easier to remove than it appeared. “The paint came out really easily in the shower afterward after but I had to go to a Maybelline event after and I left the paint in, because I couldn’t take it off at the show,” she said. “It was fun. It was a good fashion week moment.”
