What’s shark for ‘Say Cheese’? Andy Casagrande should know.
The filmmaker’s work has been featured in 27 Shark Week specials – this year alone he took part in Air Jaws: Fin of Fury, Lair of the Mega Shark, Zombie Sharks and last but not least, Great White Matrix, which airs Aug. 16.
With all of this experience under his camera strap, we choose to believe him when he tells EW.com that sharks do smile for his camera.
“They’ve got this avalanche of razor blades that they call their mouth. To me, it looks like a smile,” he says. “They’re really muscle-y. They’re just handsome.”
To continue to entertain audiences, Casagrande is constantly thinking of new ways to film our finned frenemies. So this year, the GoPro camera was his go-to device. In Lair of the Mega Shark, he attached the GoPro to a great white shark’s fin, allowing viewers to see the ocean’s depths from the shark s perspective.
“It’s great to get a beautiful, slow-motion, perfectly exposed, framed shot of a shark swimming from left to right,” he tells EW.com, “but to attach a camera to the shark’s fin people are like, ‘Holy s–, I’ve never seen that before! That’s so cool!’”
